Breaking contact is done by conducting a team bound, but away from the enemy, instead of towards them. The designation and instruction is the same except instead of “bound” it is “break contact”. e.g. “Break contact by Fireteam” means that When given the Squad Leader wishes order to break contact, with one Fireteam moving first, immediatly stop engaging the enemy and move according to the other holding orders of the element leader. Be prepared to protect them throw smoke grenades, as they move. The holding the element leader may opt to deploy concealment smoke in front of them, since it is better to move quickly without the enemy being able to engage effectively, than to try to establish fire superiority with clear vision against a potentially superior enemy. Suppressive fire in the enemy direction is still encouraged, in order smoke to slow their movement. be deployed as concealment.
