Uncontrolled Airfield Operations

An uncontrolled airfield is an airfield without Air Traffic Control (ATC). At an uncontrolled airfield, pilots are fully responsible for maintaining separation, spacing, and collision avoidance. To improve situational awareness, pilots should use the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to broadcast their position, altitude, and intentions to other nearby aircraft.

The uncontrolled airfield take off procedure follows the process:

Worked Example: Example: Departure from an Uncontrolled Airfield FM/BG-1906

Part 1: Engine Start and Departure Planning

  • Action 1: Ensure Correct Net
    • Confirm you are on the correct CTAF for the airfield.
  • Action 2: Start Engine
    • Start the aircraft and monitor CTAF for other traffic.
  • Action 3: Decide Departure Runway
    • Select a departure runway based current airfield traffic.

Part 2: Taxi and Runway Entry

  • Action 1: Begin Taxi
  • Begin taxi at the pilot's discretion.
    • Exceptions:
      • Crossing a runway.
      • Another aircraft is operating on the ground.
  • Action 2: Visually Scan While Taxiing
    • Maintain a visual scan for aircraft, vehicles, and other hazards while taxiing.
  • Radio: Announce Runway Entry
    • Make a CTAF call before entering the runway.

Part 3: Line-Up and Departure

  • Action 1: Line Up
    • Enter and line up on the runway when safe to do so.
  • Action 2: Take-Off
    • Commence take-off when ready and clear of conflicting traffic.
  • Radio: Announce Runway Vacated
    • Make a CTAF call once you have cleared the runway.

Example: Departure from an Uncontrolled Airfield

Aircraft Callsign: Victor 2
Airfield: Altis Airbase

Part 1

  • Action: Confirmed correct radio channel.
  • Action: Started engine (Reference Point A1).
  • Action: Decided Runway 22L for departure.

Part 2

  • Action: Begun taxi toward 22L.
  • Action: Constantly visually scanning airfield.
    • Radio: "Altis Airbase Traffic, Victor 2, crossing Runway 22R to entrance 22L, Altis" (Spoken at Reference Point A2).
  • Action: Taxiing through 22R en route to 22L.
    • Radio: "Altis Airbase Traffic, Victor 2, Runway 22R Clear, Altis" (Spoken at Reference Point A3).
  • Action: Have crossed out of 22R into short taxiway.
    • Radio: "Altis Airbase Traffic, Victor 2, Entering Runway 22L, Altis" (Spoken at Reference Point A4).
  • Action: Taxied onto 22L.

Part 3
